Getting a green card

I am planning to work my way across Australia. Is it essential to have a green card? How do I get one?

• UK citizens without dependents who are under 30 may apply for a one-year working holiday visa which will allow you to supplement your travels in Oz with temporary work. The visa costs £60 and requires you to send your passport, proof of at least £2000 in your bank account and the results of a medical examination if you plan on working in healthcare, hospitality or education. It will take four to five weeks (maybe more) to process your application and if/when your visa is granted you can choose to wait up to a year before you actually enter Oz and then your visa begins. The Australian High Commission in London (020 7379 4334, Australia House, The Strand, London WC2B 4LA) has a very informative website (www.australia.org.uk) where you can download the necessary form 1150.

Good luck,

John Sheppard.
